It's catch up time!

I am so sorry!  I did not realize how long it had been since my last entry.  Hopefully, this will let you know what has been happening, where we are in the academic areas, and what is coming up for the next nine weeks.

On Tuesday, October 18 the fourth grade classes had their A.R. celebration for those students who met their goal with A.R. points!  Way to go Zoey B., Steven C., Alex C., Aniya D., Hannah G., Kaitlyn K., Angilina P., Emily P., and Adrianna W.

Everyone in the class has set their goal for the next nine weeks,  Ten A.R. points is the minimum number of points that each child can get and still participate in the next celebration in December.  That celebration will be lunch in the room with the teacher AND a visit to the dessert bar that will be provided by the participant's parents.  Get out those favorite dessert recipes and be prepared!  I am looking for everyone in the class to be a part of that celebration. :)  Certificates will be given out to the student with the most books read and the student with the highest number of points.

Science Night was October 4th.  Many of you came out to support Mrs. Cauffiel and the other volunteers who worked so hard to put it together.  Thanks for your participation!

Any student that wishes to participate in the Science Fair on November 15 needs to return the entry form by Friday, October21.

Now to the ACADEMIC NEWS:

For the next nine weeks we will be covering the following concepts in....

Spelling:  Sorts 12-19 (Hopefully!)
These sorts cover many different spelling patterns found in the English language.  Just watch for the spelling list to come home in your child's aganda.

English:  A great deal of material will be covered in this area.  We will begin with a study of nouns.  This will cover common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, possessive nouns.  Students will be responsible for knowing and using the rules that apply to any spelling changes that occur in these noun forms.
Verbs will follow.  I am not sure how far we will get in this area.  I know we will get to action verbs, helping verbs, and possibly linking verbs.  I will keep you updated.

Reading:  Learning about the different parts of a story and how they work together will be our focus.  We will see how characters develop, how figurative language is used,  and other story elements.

Science:  Students will learn about simple machines, force and motion, and light and sound.

Social Studies:  European explorers and colonization will be covered from now until the Winter break.

Math:  Division, geometry, measuring angles, lines, input/output, and algebra will be highlighted during this nine week period.
