THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE!

We have just completed our seventy-ninth day of school!  Can you believe it?  The year is moving by very quickly.  I just wanted to let you know about some things that will be coming up before the break.

First, starting Thursday, Dec. 14  and going through Friday, Dec. 16 all grade levels will be completing the checkpoint testing.  These test will be given from 8:00-9:40 each day.  Please have your child here on time and well rested on these days.

Our Holiday party will be from 9:00-10:00 on Thursday, Dec. 22.  We will have a book exchange among the students.  Boys will need to bring a boy's book and a girl a girl's book.  Each book should be new, wrapped and a name tag on it.  The cost of the book should be between $5-$10.

We will have a test over the 13 Colonies on Friday, Dec. 16.  Students have information and graphic organizers in their INB's.  They should know each colony and the region to which it belongs, where it is located on the map, the climate, the geography, natural resources, and how people made their living.

A Break is in Sight!

Wow!  What a busy two weeks we have had.
Conference week was wonderful.  I enjoyed getting to sit down and talk to each of you about your child.  Please let me know if  you have any questions and/or concerns at any time.

41/2 week progress reports will come home on Nov. 30 with any student that has a C or below in any subject area.

The next AR celebration will be January 12-after the winter break.  All AR goals must be reached by Dec. 22.  Goals, points, and number of books read were recorded and sent home today, November 7.  The information was placed in your child's agenda.  Encourage your child not to wait until the last minute to get those graphic organizers done.  These must be turned in to get credit for the books they have read!

We will be having a Social Studies test on Monday, November 14.  It will cover the early explorers.  A study guide will come home on Wednesday.  The students do have most of the information in their INB as well.
In Math we will have a test on Thursday over two and three-digit numbers divided by a one digit number.  We will then begin dividing two and three-digit numbers by two digits.  Please keep practicing this with you child.

Please  remember that we are having a school-wide canned food drive for the next few weeks.  If possible, please contribute to  this great community cause.

I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for the birthday wishes, chocolate, cards, gift cards, and special gifts.  Working at Ford is one of the most wonderful experiences that I have ever had.  You and your children make coming to work such a joy each and every day!  I am soooo blessed to be a part of this community.  Thank you all for being a part of my life.

It's catch up time!

I am so sorry!  I did not realize how long it had been since my last entry.  Hopefully, this will let you know what has been happening, where we are in the academic areas, and what is coming up for the next nine weeks.

On Tuesday, October 18 the fourth grade classes had their A.R. celebration for those students who met their goal with A.R. points!  Way to go Zoey B., Steven C., Alex C., Aniya D., Hannah G., Kaitlyn K., Angilina P., Emily P., and Adrianna W.

Everyone in the class has set their goal for the next nine weeks,  Ten A.R. points is the minimum number of points that each child can get and still participate in the next celebration in December.  That celebration will be lunch in the room with the teacher AND a visit to the dessert bar that will be provided by the participant's parents.  Get out those favorite dessert recipes and be prepared!  I am looking for everyone in the class to be a part of that celebration. :)  Certificates will be given out to the student with the most books read and the student with the highest number of points.

Science Night was October 4th.  Many of you came out to support Mrs. Cauffiel and the other volunteers who worked so hard to put it together.  Thanks for your participation!

Any student that wishes to participate in the Science Fair on November 15 needs to return the entry form by Friday, October21.

Now to the ACADEMIC NEWS:

For the next nine weeks we will be covering the following concepts in....

Spelling:  Sorts 12-19 (Hopefully!)
These sorts cover many different spelling patterns found in the English language.  Just watch for the spelling list to come home in your child's aganda.

English:  A great deal of material will be covered in this area.  We will begin with a study of nouns.  This will cover common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, irregular plural nouns, possessive nouns.  Students will be responsible for knowing and using the rules that apply to any spelling changes that occur in these noun forms.
Verbs will follow.  I am not sure how far we will get in this area.  I know we will get to action verbs, helping verbs, and possibly linking verbs.  I will keep you updated.

Reading:  Learning about the different parts of a story and how they work together will be our focus.  We will see how characters develop, how figurative language is used,  and other story elements.

Science:  Students will learn about simple machines, force and motion, and light and sound.

Social Studies:  European explorers and colonization will be covered from now until the Winter break.

Math:  Division, geometry, measuring angles, lines, input/output, and algebra will be highlighted during this nine week period.

Up-coming Test

The class will have a test in Science on Wednesday, September 28.  A study guide was handed out today.  The material is coming from pages 129-139 in the Science book.  Students need to use their INBs, as well.
We will have a regions and map skill test on Thursday, September 29.  A study guide will be sent home on Thursday, September 22.

We will be going to the media center on Friday for a lesson and to checkout books.
Everyone should be reading AR books and taking the tests.  The AR books can also be used for the 25 book requirement.  Graphic organizers should be filled out for these books so that each student gets credit for the books that they read.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

What a great week!

We have been very busy this week.  The class has worked so hard on learning the elements of a narrative writing, learning abour area models, weather, and map skills.

You should be very proud of the progress they have made in their writing.  Every child has been attentive during instruction and enthusiastic about sharing their work.  I enjoy seeing them light up when the have the opportunity to share what they have done!

Most of your children are doing quite well recalling the basic multiplication facts.  However, there are some who need to practice a bit more.  Everything that we do in Math this year focuses on multiplication and division skills.  If they know their facts then their confidence will be so much better.  I have included some links to different Math sites that they can go to and practice while at home.

Open House

Open house is tonight.  It begins at 6:30 in the cafeteria.  Introduction of the staff will be included in a brief PTSA meeting.  You will then be dismissed to the classrooms.  I look forward to seeing everyone tonight!
